Today, Sunday, February 2nd, we were victims of a well coordinated ATM robbery near the exit of Pick n Pay at around 4:30 pm.

Several men approached us and told us the mall was closing and that we needed a special ticket to exit. There were maybe 5 or 6 of them working as a team, and they coerced my partner and I aggressively to the ATM around the corner. I even told them that I was going to leave the mall and not go to Pick N Pay but they refused stating it was against the law to leave without a ticket.

They forced me to insert my card to get a "ticket" and input my numbers. I kept stalling, inputting random numbers as I was confused and I could feel this was an attempt to rob me, so they sent more guys to act as frustrated bystanders trying to get me to hurry up and insert my debit and credit cards. A few of them had security ID cards hanging around their neck with a patch that even said security on their shirt. It was a professional criminal operation, and even with the two real security guards in orange vests trying to stop them, I believe they were outnumbered and felt like they would be in danger. I felt trapped, and I didn't want my partner to be put in danger, and so I just stalled and delayed until they got frustrated and just ran off with one of my cards.

I immediately blocked it, and they were unable to withdraw or charge any funds.

This is a warning to tourists. They targeted us as the mall was closing up and worked in a large group and acted as law enforcement/security to force us to get tickets to exit the mall at a later time.

Please step up your security game. We were there a while waiting for a police officer or armed security to come, but they arrived too late. This was our first day in South Africa. What a way to arrive.

At least there wasn't any violence and no one got hurt. These thieves and scam artists were working in a big team so it should have been evident. I don't believe I was the first target at the mall today because I saw another older foreigner who looked like he was also a victim of a scam or theft. Poor guy.

Be careful. I always thought malls would be safe with all the people and security but not even East Rand Mall, where many tourists frequent due to its proximity to the airport, is safe.

Dear East Rand Mall Management,

As a frequent visitor, I have always appreciated the variety of stores and the convenience your mall offers. And I must say the mall used to be extremely busy! However, recently visiting the mall is a frustration. The new parking pay points are a mess, there use to be at least two pay points at every entrance, but you guys have removed that, that makes exacting the mall a real frustration!

The undercover parking lot at entrance 4 is being used as a storage facility for old shop equipment. This issue not only detracts from the overall experience not even to mention the appearance of the mall, but also poses a safety hazard to your patrons. I noticed that at another section of the undercover parking is another spot where the old pay points are just stacked.

The ongoing construction work within the mall is causing significant inconvenience. While I understand that renovations are necessary to improve facilities, the current state of disarray, with so much dust and excessive noise, makes shopping at the mall a stressful experience. Better management of the construction areas would greatly help alleviate some of these issues. The constant dust is defiantly a health risk for all the surrounding shops and customers.

I enjoy going to Mugg and Bean, but how can one sit and enjoy lunch in dust and a noise! Clearly you guys have no consideration for your tenants or your customers. I have phoned central management numerous times complaining about the dust and noise going on at the Checkers construction site and nothing gets done about it!

Lastly, I have found the bathrooms to be consistently dirty and poorly stocked, especially the bathrooms close to Spur. Clean and hygienic restrooms are a basic expectation in any public facility, This does not only reflect poorly on the mall’s management but also raises health concerns.

Shopping at East Rand mall use to be a pleasant shopping experience, the Mall use to be so busy that one can hardly find a parking space, but one can clearly see how that is changing. When you visit surrounding Malls the Malls are buys and getting in and out of the Mall is not a headache, I wish I can say the same about East Rand Mall.

A total shambles of a Mall. Parking atrocious. More than half the time pay points don't work or your paid for ticket won't be accepted. Long queues often to get out. Shopping mix is wrong. Those with disabilities are not catered for. I could go on. But I have had this Mall in spades. My suggestion. Management will nor respond to legitimate complaints so take your hard earned cash and go anywhere else but to East Rand Mall. I hate it with a passion
