I love my new art work by Rand Snell! He is a renaissance man who has so much talent. Whether he’s creating art, playing piano, writing a story, or piloting a plane, you make a connection with him because of his willingness to share what’s in his heart. I hung this piece in my study to remind myself to change it up, and think through things differently when I get stuck on a problem.

I recently acquired two collage artworks from St Petersburg artist Rand Snell that demonstrate his range of expression and technique.

One piece is composed of brightly-colored plastic ribbons of tape flattened onto a 2-D plane. The colors and twists of the tape provide energy while the gently curling shapes offer a softer, more organic feel.

The second work is more characteristic of the artist, being crafted of prints of his photographic work. There are tightly arranged geometric strips of one photo layered atop an underlying image of the sky over Tampa Bay, a photo taken through the cockpit canopy of his airplane. In the underlying photo one sees water droplets running back from a light rain. The overlaid strips are arranged in a radial pattern depicting the sudden splatter of a raindrop on the airplane’s canopy and all the surprising, unexpected energy of that impact. One can appreciate the piece on many levels: emotionally, intellectually, and aesthetically.
